Artwork Requirements

Artwork Requirements

Getting your artwork right before you order is the single most important step in the DTF printing process. The quality of your transfer is directly tied to the quality of the file you provide. Read through these requirements before uploading.

If your file does not meet these standards, your order may be delayed. If you need help getting your artwork print-ready, we offer artwork services — see the bottom of this page.

Preferred File Types

Transparent PNG is the preferred format for DTF printing. It preserves your design with a clean, transparent background and does not require additional background removal before printing.

PDF files are also accepted and work well for vector-based artwork.

Other formats we can work with include AI (Adobe Illustrator) and PSD (Adobe Photoshop) — if you have the original source file, send that. Source files almost always produce better results than exported raster files.

Formats to avoid: JPEG, BMP, HEIC, screenshots, and photos of screens or printed materials. These formats either compress your artwork or cannot be made transparent without significant cleanup.

Minimum Resolution

300 DPI (dots per inch) at the intended print size is the minimum acceptable resolution for DTF printing.

Resolution must be measured at the actual size you want printed — not at a smaller size. A file that is 300 DPI at 2 inches is not 300 DPI at 10 inches. If you scale artwork up, the effective resolution drops.

If your file is below 300 DPI at print size, it may appear blurry, soft, or pixelated on the finished transfer. We offer a Low-Resolution Image Repair service for files that are close but not quite there — but this service cannot guarantee perfect results on severely degraded files.

Transparent Background Requirements

DTF transfers print everything in your file — including backgrounds. If your artwork has a white or colored background, that background will print as part of the transfer.

To avoid unwanted backgrounds on your transfer:

  • Use a transparent PNG with no background layer
  • Make sure the canvas area outside your design is fully transparent, not white
  • Check your file in an image editor before uploading — a white background on a white canvas can be easy to miss

If your file has a background that needs to be removed, add our Raw Art Setup or Low-Resolution Image Repair service before checkout, or contact us before ordering.

Color Mode

RGB color mode is recommended for DTF printing. DTF printers output in RGB, so files prepared in RGB will produce the most accurate color results.

CMYK files are accepted but colors may shift slightly during conversion. If color accuracy is critical to your design — such as brand colors or specific Pantone matches — prepare your file in RGB and note any color concerns when you place your order.

[Add any specific color matching or Pantone capabilities here if applicable.]

Maximum Print Width

Tri-State DTF prints up to 24 inches wide. This is the maximum width of our film roll.

Designs wider than 24 inches cannot be printed as a single transfer. If your design exceeds this width, it will need to be split or resized before printing. Contact us before ordering if you have a design that approaches or exceeds this limit.

Image Sizing

Size your artwork at the exact dimensions you want it printed. Do not rely on us to resize your design unless you have purchased an artwork service.

If you are building a gang sheet, place your designs at their intended print sizes before uploading. Designs that are not sized correctly will be printed at the size they appear in the file.

Customers are responsible for verifying that all designs are sized correctly before approving their order.

Hairline Details and Fine Lines

Very thin lines — sometimes called hairlines — can be difficult to reproduce cleanly in DTF printing. Lines that are too thin may appear broken, faded, or disappear entirely on the finished transfer.

As a general guideline, keep line weights at a visible, printable thickness. If your design includes very fine detail, review it at 100% zoom at print size before submitting. If lines look thin or fragile on screen at that size, they may not print cleanly.

[Add a minimum line weight specification here if you have one.]

Small Text

Small text can lose legibility in DTF printing, especially at very small sizes or when using thin or script fonts.

For best results:

  • Keep text at a readable size relative to the print dimensions
  • Avoid very thin or hairline-weight fonts at small sizes
  • Bold or medium-weight fonts reproduce more reliably at small sizes than ultra-light or script fonts
  • Review your text at 100% zoom at print size before submitting

[Add a minimum recommended text size here if you have one.]

Glow and Drop Shadow Effects

Glow effects, outer glows, and soft drop shadows can print, but results depend on how they are built in the file. Effects that rely on semi-transparency or feathering may not reproduce exactly as they appear on screen.

If your design includes glow or shadow effects, flatten or rasterize them into the file at 300 DPI before exporting. Do not rely on live layer effects in exported files.

Semi-Transparent and Faded Effects

DTF transfers use a white ink underbase, which means semi-transparent areas in your artwork will not appear transparent on the garment — they will print with the underbase showing through, which can affect how fades and transparency effects look when pressed.

If your design relies on fabric color showing through a faded or semi-transparent area, that effect will not transfer as expected. Design with this in mind, or contact us before ordering if you have questions about how a specific effect will print.

Gradients

Gradients generally print well in DTF as long as the file is high resolution and the gradient is rasterized into the file. Avoid using live gradient effects in vector files that have not been properly exported — flatten and rasterize before saving your final file.

Gradients that fade to transparent at the edges will interact with the white underbase. The fade may not appear as a true fade to fabric — it will fade to white underbase instead. If a clean edge is important, use a hard edge rather than a transparent fade.

Halftones

Halftone patterns can be printed but require careful file preparation. Halftones that are too fine may fill in or lose definition. If your design uses halftones, prepare them at print size and resolution and review at 100% zoom before submitting.

[Add any specific halftone frequency or dot size recommendations here if applicable.]

Copyright and Trademark Responsibility

You are solely responsible for ensuring you have the legal right to print any artwork, logos, characters, brand marks, or licensed images included in your order.

Tri-State DTF does not verify copyright or trademark ownership. By placing an order, you confirm that you have the rights or proper licensing to reproduce the artwork you are submitting. Tri-State DTF is not liable for any copyright or trademark infringement resulting from customer-submitted artwork.

Customer Approval Responsibility

You are responsible for reviewing and approving your artwork before production begins.

This includes:

  • Spelling and grammar in all text
  • Design sizing and placement
  • Color accuracy
  • File orientation
  • Number of copies of each design

Once your order enters production, changes cannot be made. Tri-State DTF is not responsible for errors in customer-approved artwork, including misspellings, incorrect sizing, or wrong colors.

If you have any doubt about your file, contact us before placing your order.

Common Artwork Mistakes

These are the most frequent issues we see that delay orders or affect print quality:

  • Submitting a JPEG or screenshot instead of a transparent PNG
  • File resolution below 300 DPI at print size
  • White background included in the file that prints as a white box around the design
  • Designs sized incorrectly — too small or too large for the intended garment placement
  • Text that is too small or too thin to print legibly
  • Transparent fades that interact unexpectedly with the white underbase
  • Sending a low-resolution version of a file when a higher-resolution original exists

Tips for Best Print Quality

  • Always work at 300 DPI or higher from the start — do not upscale a low-resolution file
  • Export as a transparent PNG at the exact size you want printed
  • If you have the original vector or layered source file, send that instead of a flattened export
  • Review your file at 100% zoom at print size before submitting
  • Double-check all text for spelling before uploading
  • If you are unsure about anything, contact us before placing your order
